Abstract

Hydrogen is obtained from gaseous or vaporous hydrocarbons, having a higher molecular weight than methane by bringing the gases together with steam at a temperature of between 400 and 1000 DEG C. into contact successively with at least two different layers of catalysts arranged one behind the other, the catalytic activity of each layer being lower than that of the next following one, while the temperature in each catalyst is lower than in the following one. The catalysts are preferably selected so that the higher molecular and unsaturated hydrocarbons are converted at the beginning of the catalyst layer and the lower molecular hydrocarbons and methane towards the end of the layer. Suitable catalysts include metals of the iron group, if desired activated by the addition of non-reducible oxides of metals from groups 2 to 6 of the periodic-system, e.g. aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide, uranium oxide, cerium oxide, chromium oxide, vanadium oxide, beryllium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide, barium oxide, titanium oxide or molybdenum oxide. The catalysts in the first layer may be employed with a smaller amount of activating agent or in a physical condition of lower activity (e.g. as glowed oxides) than in the following zone or zones, or they may consist of a metal of the iron group made into an aqueous paste with a hydraulic binding agent and allowed to set. Substances which lead to the formation of soot, such as silica and other gels, must be avoided. Catalysts obtained according to Specification 376,358 may be employed in the first part of the reaction chamber, and those obtained according to Specifications 267,535 and 323,855, [both in Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], at the end of the reaction chamber. Specification 288,662, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], also is referred to.
