Abstract
Hydrocarbon combustion products are oxidised at elevated temperature with added air in the presence of a catalyst which comprises a major proportion by weight of a refractory metal oxide-containing carrier and a minor proportion by weight of a component catalyzing the reaction, in a process characterized in that the oxidation is effected at at least 177 DEG C., preferably at 427 DEG C.-650 DEG C., in the presence of a composite catalyst containing an acid-acting multi-component carrier effective in catalyzing the cracking of hydrocarbons, for example alumina containing at least 0,1% of halogen or the refractory carrier may include a minor proportion of a phosphate salt, or it may comprise at least one of the refractory oxides of aluminium, titanium, zirconium or thorium with at least one of the oxides of silicon and boron; and an oxidizing catalyst component selected from metals of the platinum group and the oxides of metals of the group: vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and manganese. The catalyst may be one which has been used in a catalystic hydrocarbon reforming process, and which contains not more than 10% by weight of carbon. The hydrocarbon combustion products may be the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. In this application the catalyst may be disposed in the inner annular space in a cylindrical vessel containing an outer cylindrical screen and an inner perforated centre pipe, the gases passing through the catalyst and out via the centre pipe. The catalyst carrier may be manufactured by any suitable method, including precipitation, or may be a naturally occuring base which has if desired been heated for example by calcining or by acid action. The halogen may be incorporated as the element, or as a volatile salt, or by heating with the acid, either anhydrous or in solution. The catalyst component may be introduced by any suitable conventional method.
