Abstract

520,233. Purifying oils and other liquids. BIBBY & SONS, Ltd., J., STURTEVANTENGINEERING CO., Ltd., IBISON, A., and WAGNER, H. W. Oct. 11, 1938, No. 29424. [Class 91] Liquids, e.g. mineral or vegetable oils or used lubricating oil, are purified by adding thereto or to a solution thereof a solid adsorbent or the like and submitting to electrostatic precipitation. The adsorbent may be made alkaline or acid if the oil be acid or alkaline. The treatment may be repeated ; mineral oils may first be treated with sulphuric acid or liquid sulphur dioxide. In examples: (1) Activated fuller's earth is added to dirty diesel oil and the mixture submitted to electrostatic precipitation ; (2) Crude vegetable oil or a solution thereof is mixed with infusorial earth and filtered ; the sludge on the filter is mixed with the solvent " Westrosol" and submitted to electrostatic precipitation ; the solvent is then distilled from the oil recovered from the sludge.
