<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Apparatus for the optional recovery of either absolute alcohol or high grade rectified alcohol.
In the production of absolute alcohol according to the principle of distillation of "azeotropic" systems, apparatuses are used which comprise a dehydration column, a column for the recovery of alcohol and ancillary equipment. On the other hand, the apparatus for the production of 94% alcohol by rectification according to the method of Barbet, Guillaume and others are known. a.,
EMI1.1
put together.
The apparatus for the production of absolute alcohol, like those for the production of 94% rectified alcohol, are only suitable for the production of the alcohol in question.
The invention provides the ability to produce either absolute alcohol or 94% rectified alcohol with a single apparatus. The device is composed of the two usual columns and their auxiliary equipment. One of these columns is used as a dewatering column for the production of absolute alcohol, as a rectification column for the production of 94% alcohol, the other functions as an alcohol recovery column for the production of absolute alcohol and as a forward column for the production of 94% alcohol.
The operation of such a device does not cause any difficulties, because the production of absolute alcohol and rectified alcohol largely coincide when using columns of the same diameter and with the same number of trays.
Furthermore, the condensers, coolers and preheaters attached to the column can also be used in both cases without further ado, because their effective areas meet the requirements of both processes in the same way.
A great advantage of the mixed apparatus is that it can be converted to the production of absolute or 94% alcohol as required, without any modification of the apparatus being necessary. In order to pass from one generation method to the other, it is sufficient to put certain parts of the device out of operation; For example, the decanting vessel required for the production of absolute alcohol is switched off to produce 94% alcohol.
The other shutdowns can be accomplished quickly and easily by suitable means, e.g. B. by operating taps.
The same idea of solution can also be found in mash distillers for the direct production of fine spirits use, in which z. B. 94o alcohol is made directly from the mash. Such an apparatus essentially contains a stripping (mash) column, a forward column and a rectification column with their auxiliary apparatus. The invention leads to the construction of a device which can be used at will for the direct recovery of rectified 94% alcohol from mash or for the production of absolute alcohol.
In the latter case, the mash column works together with the head column as a distillation column to produce the crude fuel (approximately 89% -94%), while the rectification column plays the role of the dewatering column.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
With this conversion of the apparatus it is not necessary to provide a special column for the recovery of the alcohol, because the alcoholic layer separated in the decantation vessel is again returned to the unit mash column head column. In this case, it is advisable to refine the alcohol at the same time or to connect the continuous purification device of a known type to the dewatering column.
It is clear that when producing 94% alcohol it is not necessary to use a removal liquid (auxiliary liquid) such as is used for the production of absolute alcohol.
If, after the production of absolute alcohol, one changes to that of 94% alcohol, the extraction liquid present in the apparatus must first be removed from it, which is possible without difficulty.
In the following, the conversion of rectifying devices according to the Barbet and Guillaume systems will be explained in detail using the drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a rectifying apparatus according to Barbet, which consists of the following parts:
Forward column 1 with condenser 2 and cooler 3; Rectification column 4 with condenser 5 and cooler 6, furthermore with a cooler 7 for removing the rectified fuel; Preheater for raw alcohol 8; Fusel oil cooler.
2 shows the changes in the known rectifying apparatus when it is converted to an apparatus for dewatering primate fuel, which is also known and is described, for example, in French patent specification no. 580168. The lines that are common to both systems (FIGS. 1 and 2) are shown in full lines. The dashed lines show the special pipelines for the operation of the apparatus as a plant for the production of absolute alcohol while
EMI2.1
make pipelines recognizable.
The rectification column 4 is converted to the dewatering column A; Their condenser 5 and condenser 6 become the condenser D and condenser Di of the dewatering column. The forward column. 1 is used as rectifying column C for the alcohol coming from the small column B.
The former condenser 2 with the cooler 3 serves as a condenser M or as a cooler M.? the rectifying column C.
The preheater 8 is used as a heating element K for the column A.
Only the cooler G for the rectified goods and the fusel oil cooler of the remain unused

Separator H, which holds the ternary mixture of water-alcohol-removing agent. which has been condensed and cooled by the condenser D and cooler Di.
Small column B, in which the lower layer of the separating vessel H is further treated in order to separate the removal agent from the aqueous alcohol.
Cooler J for removing the absolute alcohol.
The conversion into an apparatus for the dehydration of raw fuel would be the same, but it also requires the cleaning apparatus as newly added organs to separate the impurities forming the first run and the tail.
3 shows the conversion of a Guillaume system rectification apparatus - which is also very widespread - into a column for high-grade crude fuel, connected to an apparatus for the
Dewatering of raw spirit, the mode of action of which is known to the person skilled in the art and, incidentally, is described in French patents No. 614913 and No. 617042.
The mash column 12 and the flow column 13 with the auxiliary devices 14, 15, 16 are used for the extraction of the high-grade crude fuel. At the same time, they also play the role of the column
EMI2.3
Of the new apparatus, only seven are added: the cooler 27, the decanter 28, the small auxiliary liquid column 17, the decanter 29, the small forward column 30, the condenser 31, the cooler 32 for the absolute alcohol.
As in the previous case, the pipelines shown by full lines are used in both operating modes, while the dash-dotted lines only represent those used for the rectification operation and the broken lines only the pipelines used for the drainage operation.
It should also be mentioned that this apparatus and also all other known continuous rectification apparatus, whatever system they may be, not only in the above-mentioned type, but also in apparatus for direct dewatering, i.e. H. for the direct extraction of anhydrous alcohol from mash.
