Abstract

519,629. Supply systems for welding arcs; exciting dynamos. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 22, 1938, No. 27608. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1937. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] In order to prevent undersired reversals of polarity in a welding generator and to permit of reversal when required means are provided for providing a comparatively small constant current to the generator windings, the direction of which can be reversed by a switch when required, so that afer a stoppage of current it is restarted in the desired direction. The invention is described with respect to a cross-field generator with short - circuited ,brushes 21, 22, and series field-winding 16 and commutator winding 14. The Figure shows such a generator provided with an auxiliary winding 47 which is supplied with current through a transformer 40 connected to tappings on the field-windings of a motor 33 driving the generator. The current is rectified by a rectifier 44 and its direction controlled by a switch 10. The winding 47 may be dispensed with and the current supplied direct to the windings 14, 16. In a modification, the winding 47 is connected across a resistance in series with the fieldwinding of a motor driving the generator. In a further modification, the generator is driven by an internalcombustion engine and the winding 47 supplied from the ignition-battery.
