Abstract

1207. Olmsted, A. H. Jan. 15. Exciting. - The voltage of a self-excited or separately-excited generator is regulated by means of an additional machine, which is connected either across the field-magnet winding of the generator or of its exciter, or is in shunt to a resistance in series with the generator or exciter field - magnet winding; the excitation of the additional machine is controlled by an automatic regulator of any known kind in accordance with the voltage to be regulated. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a three-phase alternator 1 has its field-magnet winding 5 supplied with current from an exciter 6, and the additional machine 11 is connected across the exciter field-magnet winding 9. The machine 11 may be driven from the main generator shaft, or by an electric motor, &c., and its field-magnet winding 12 is connected in series with a regulating-resistance 13 which is cut in and out of circuit by means of any standard type of voltage-regulator. In a modification, the armature of the additional machine is connected in shunt to the rheostat 10 in series with the field-magnet winding 9. The field-magnet winding 12 may be shunt or separately excited, and the regulator may be arranged to shortcircuit the field-magnet winding 12. According to the Provisional Specification, a Tirrill regulator may be employed.
