Abstract

239,615. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Whitaker, F. P. June 14, 1924. Synchronizing dynamo-electric machines.-The polarity of a motor-started self-synchronizing rotary converter is automatically determined as the machine is run up to speed by means of a separately-excited field winding, and the final excitation of the machine is so adjusted as to enable it to pull into synchronism and give the normal voltage at the continuous-current terminals. In the form shown, the converter 6, which is started from the supply 4 by a motor 11, has an auxiliary winding 5 which, during the starting period, is energized by a generator 7 on the converter shaft. Closure of the control switch 1 energizes the coils 2, 3 of the contactors 10, 29 by which the motor 11 which is in series with the armature of the converter 6, and the auxiliary field coil 5 are respectively connected to the main and exciting supplies 4, 7. The volts across the motor field 9 at first are sufficient to raise the synchronous-speed indicating relay 13 and energize the coil 15 of the auxiliary contactor 17, thereby completing an independent retaining circuit through the coil 15. At the same time, contacts 22, 23 are bridged in preparation for energization of the coil 24 of the main running contactor 16. When the generator 7 has reached about 80 per cent of normal voltage, the contactor 25 closes and cuts out. sufficient of the rheostat 32 in the main exciting circuit 33<1> to give a field current which pulls the converter into synchronism. The volts across the motor coil 9 thereupon fall, the indicating relay drops, and energizes the coil 35 of a contactor 37 through contacts 33, 34, and the main running contactor 24, 16 connects the converter directly to the supply 4, the starting motor being simultaneously short-circuited. Closure of the ma.in contactor 16 opens contacts at 39, 40 to deenergize the coils 2, 3 of the motor and auxiliary excitation contactors and closes contacts at 41. 42. These contacts control the coil 43 of a field contactor 44 which cuts out a further section of the resistance 32, such as to give the required continuous converter voltage and opens the circuit of the contactor coil 25 so as to remove the short-circuit across the synchronizing tap on the resistance.
