Abstract

519,286. Casting composite joints. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., MOLLER, P. D., and HOBAN, H. C. Oct. 13, 1938, No. 29697. '[Class 83 (i)] In making a cast .metal joint between two pipes, cable sheaths or the like by means of a mould 4, 5 the joints between the mould and pipes &c. are made metal tight by wrappings 6, 7, 10, 13 of tape, e.g., fabric impregnated with tallow, varnish, oil &c. or rubber or other like material which does not evolve gas or become useless in contact with hot flux or the molten metal. The outer muff 5 may be of lead and a loose fit on the pipes so that it can be slid along to make the joints 6, 7 the thickness being made up by wrappings 9, 12 of similar tape. The inner muff 4 may be of lead, copper or brass. The muff 5 may be in two parts and of iron or other material and in this case the joints may be made by caulking stuffing glands with lead wool or impregnated cotton. Tallow is poured in through the gate 14, the mould is heated to 180‹C. and then a eutectic alloy of tin and lead at about 260‹ C. is poured in thus displacing the tallow.
