Abstract
519,199. Beryllium fluoride. SERI HOLDING SOC. ANON. Sept. 16, 1938, No. 27123. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1937. Addition to 496,773. [Class 1 (iii)] Anhydrous beryllium fluoride free from oxide is prepared by causing gaseous hydrofluoric acid to act on beryllium hydroxide at elevated temperature according to the process of the parent Specification, the beryllium hydroxide being fed continuously in counter flow to the hydrofluoric acid and the starting materials being so dry that the humidity of the hydrofluoric acid does not exceed 20 per cent. A diluent gas such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen may be employed. Mixtures of beryllium fluoride with other metal fluorides may be obtained by the addition of oxides, hydroxides or sulphides of the metals to the beryllium hydroxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of reaction vessels coated with fluorspar or with beryllium oxide, or if a mixture of another metal fluoride with beryllium fluoride is desired a vessel attachable by hydrofluoric acid to produce the desired fluoride may be used. There is also described an apparatus for carrying out the reaction comprising a tube through which beryllium hydroxide is moved by a helix in countercurrent to hydrofluoric acid, this tube being enclosed within a furnace flue having a helical partition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
