Abstract
518,732. Glass manufacture, electric dis charges in vacuum &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., PIRANI, M., and PRINZ, D. G. Aug. 30, 1938, No. 25372. [Class 56] Relates to mercury arc converters of the type comprising a liquid mercury cathode and an ignition electrode which is separated from the cathode by glass. According to the invention a glass for this purpose, which does not deteriorate in use, is composed of 0-10 per cent: of boric oxide, 3-12 per cent. of alkaline earths of which 1.5-5 per cent. is preferably barium oxide, 15-22 per cent. of alkalies of which at least two thirds is potassium oxide, the rest being mainly silica although other usual oxides such as alumina may be included. A suitable glass is prepared from a batch containing 65 per cent. of SiO2, 16 per cent of K,O, 5 per cent. of Na2O, 5 per cent. of CaO, 3 per cent. of BaO, 1 per cent. of MgO, 2 per cent, of Al2O3, and 3 per' cent. of B2O3.
