Abstract

An optical flint glass is smelted from a mix comprising in percentages by weight of glass forming oxides 26 to 33 of which SiO2 is 12 to 20; B2O3 8 to 20; alkaline earth oxides 14 to 46 of which MgO is 0 to 5; CaO 0 to 23; SrO 0 to 10; BaO 10 to 24; more than 6.5 of CdO and/or ZnO of which ZnO is 5 to 20 and CdO 0 to 7.5; ZrO2 4 to 7.5; TiO2 6 to 25, the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents. The glass may also contain up to 5% of oxides of Li, Na, K and/or Cs and up to 20% of La2O3. A number of examples are given.
