518,606. Knot - tying devices. KNORRNAHRMITTEL AKT.-GES. THAYNGEN. May 15, 1939, No. 14456. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1938. [Class 112] A knot for closing a sack or tying up an article is formed by winding a piece of string or the like loosely on a winding member in at least two relatively staggered and superposed turns, stripping the loose knot off the winding member on to the article, and tightening the knot. The knot is made on a machine comprising a rotary and reciprocating winding tube 1, having stepped lugs 3 and a spring string-gripping arm 7 entering a groove 10 in the tube, and a stripping tube 2, slidable on the tube 1, the movement of the tube 2 being arranged to lift the arm 7. The tube 2 is first advanced to raise the arm 7, the string 9 is passed across the tube 1 through a tension device to a gripper, the tube 2 is then retracted to allow the arm 7 to grip the string, and the tube 1 is then given rotary and reciprocating movements to wind the string on it as shown; the end 32 of the string is drawn through the second turn of the string by a hook 18, both ends are gripped by pincers, the tube 2 is advanced to strip the knot so formed off the tube 1 on to the article, and the knot is then tightened by moving the pincers apart. The string may be used double, as shown, to give a loop 15 for suspending the article. String-cutting means may be provided. The apparatus may be duplicated for tying both ends of a sausageshaped article.
