Relates to web winding apparatus including means for severing and attaching a running web to an empty roll core having its peripheral speed the same as the linear speed of the web. As shown in Fig. 1, a web roll R is nearing completion on a driven core supported in a roll stand 1. An empty core 14 is rotated to the position shown in arms 6 and 7 and its speed brought up to the speed of the web W. Attached to one end of the core 14 is a hook 21, Fig. 3. Positioned beneath the running web is a wire 27, looped over a pair of pins mounted on the piston-rod 23 of a vertical pneumatic cylinder 22 at one end, and gripped by a gripper 30 to the piston-rod 29 of a horizontal pneumatic cylinder 28 at the other end, Fig. 2. To commence severing the web and attaching it to the empty core 14, the piston 23 is raised so that the hook 21 engages the loop of the wire 27 and the horizontal pressure cylinder pays out the wire 27 under tension whilst the wire wraps around the core 14 in helical fashion. The web is severed at the point where the wire holds the web against the core 14. The wire 27 is released from the gripper 30 when the web has been completely severed and the core 14 commences to wind the web W. In a second embodiment, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), a hollow core is used and the hooking mechanism is provided on one of two releasable chucks for mounting the core in the reel stand. In a third embodiment, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), the severing and attaching mechanism is mounted on a stand separate from the reel stand.
