Abstract

518,489. Applying lids to containers. COLEMAN, A. M., BATER, C. C., and LEE, G. A. Aug. 10, 1938, No. 23622. [Class 125 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] Lids are applied to vacuumized or other containers by a magnetic plunger head 11, Figs. 1 and 2, which takes the lowermost lid from a stack 10, Fig. 2, rotates through a right angle about a shaft 16 and by the action of a cam 24 and follower 25, thrusts the lid into a container positioned in a trough 18, 18a, Fig. 1, to which it has been passed from a shoot 17, after which the containers are lifted from the trough by a conveyer 27, which carries them to a discharge chute. A date may be stamped on the container while in the trough, e.g. by a rubber stamp which, by mechanism similar to that which actuates the plunger head 11, reciprocates vertically and horizontally and also rotates through a right angles to engage the ink pad and to stamp. The stamp may also be simply reciprocated and stamp through an inked tape as in a typewriter. The mechanism is adjustable for different sizes of container by sliding a framework carrying the stamp delivery shoot side member, and discharge shoot side member on bars 39, 40, 'Fig. 1, by a handwheel 41. A trip mecharism to stop the apparatus when there is no container on the delivery shoot or in-the trough comprises a pawl 56, Fig. 2, through which the machine is driven and which is lifted out of engagement with ratchet 57 fixed on shaft 16 when a trip lever 52, Fig. 1, is appropriately moved. A trip lever 60 in the discharge shoot acts similarly. Another trip device to break the drive to the elevator and stamping mechanism acts through a toothed pawl 73, Fig. 2, spring held in engagement with collar 72, the tension of the spring being overcome when a container or the user's arm becomes jammed in the elevator or the mouth of the discharge shoot. There is also a mechanism for taking the weight of the pile of lids while the lowermost lid is being removed. Specification 392,270 is referred to.
