Abstract
963,011. Packaging; filling containers. Y. MARCHADOUR. Sept. 22, 1960 [Sept. 23, 1959; Feb. 26, 1960; July 26, 1960], No. 32608/60. Headings B8C and B8T. [Also in Division F1] Paste-like or semi-liquid material is fed from a container 2 through a rotary valve 7 into a plunger pump 10, the valve being then rotated to allow the pump to discharge its contents through the valve into an empty container R. A shaft 12 operates the valve 7 through a cam 22 and the pump plunger 11 through a crank 15, the shaft 12 being rotated intermittently through a disengageable clutch key 62a which is operable to connect or disconnect the shaft from a continuously rotating sleeve 51 which drives a Geneva mechanism 70 operating a star wheel 75, Fig. 5, to feed the cams R into filling position. The shaft 12 also drives a second shaft 27 which intermittently drives a feed worm 4 in the container 2. Filling operation.-At the beginning of a filling operation, valve 7 is positioned as in Fig. 1 and the shaft 17 is stationary. The Geneva gear feeds a can R into contact with a lever 67, Fig. 5, which releases the clutch key 62 so that shaft 12 is clutched to the sleeve 51 for rotation. The plunger 11 is thereby driven on its suction stroke and shaft 27 is rotated so that worm 4 is driven until a pawl 36 is disengaged from a ratchet 37 by a stationary ramp 43a. The Geneva gear then moves the can R to the filling position, whereby lever 67 is released so that it declutches the shaft 12 from sleeve 51, thereby stopping piston 11 at the end of its suction stroke. The succeeding can then contacts lever 67 so that shaft 12 is again clutched to sleeve 51 and rotated whereby cam 23 rapidly moves valve 7 to its discharge position and the plunger 11 drives the material through the valve into the can R through a replaceable outlet nozzle 8 in the valve 7. The valve 7 is then returned to its original position and the Geneva gear then rotates another step to disengage shaft 12 and feed another empty can for a repetition of the process. The stroke of the pump is adjustable by adjusting the position of a block 19, Fig. 5, connecting a swinging lever 15 to member 21 attached to the piston 11. In Fig. 7 the feed worm is very short and its lower blade scrapes over the container outlet 5. In a modification, Fig. 10, the cans R are moved intermittently by a chain conveyer 87<SP>1</SP>, actuated by a pawl and ratchet 92, into position beneath plungers 106 which are operated by a camactuated bar 110 to compress the contents of each cam through a sheet 103.
