Abstract

252,090. Beecham Estates & Pills, Ltd., and Sumner, W. March 16,1925. Packeting pills and small articles by wrapping- up.-An open-topped receptacle is formed by a hollow plunger which presses a wrapper through a hole in a fixed plate and a number of pills or other small articles are fed through the plunger into the receptacle; the mouth of the receptacle is then closed by two pairs of grippers, one of which holds the upper end of the receptacle stationarv while the other twists the neck of the receptacle. A wrapper thrown from the bottom of a receptacle 12, Fig. 1, is carried by a reciprocating arm 19 until it lies over an aperture 26 in a fixed plate 23, and a plunger 8 operated from a sliding carriage 2 by means of levers 44, 47 then descends and forces the wrapper through the aperture 26, thus forming an open-topped receptacle round the lower end of the plunger. The hollow plunger 8, which receives pills &c. from a hopper 62, is provided with a measuring-device comprising shutters 57, 58 connected to a lever 59 operated by fixed stops 61, 62, movement of the shutter 58 to the left allowing the desired quantity of pills to drop into the paper receptacle when the plunger 8 reaches the bottom of its stroke. When the carriage 2 returns to the left a pair of grippers carried by spring-pressed pivoted rods 29, Figs. 1 and 11. grip the mouth of the receptacle immediately below the aperture 26, and a second pair of grippers 10 carried by spring-pressed arms 35 mounted on a discharge tube grip the neck of the receptacle. As the carriage 2 completes its movement to the left, a rock 50 engaging a pinion 53 rotates the arms 35 and thus twists the neck of the receptacle, which falls down the discharge tube as soon as both pairs of grippers are opened during the subsequent advance of the carriage 2. A free-wheel clutch causes the grippers 10 to rotate in one direction only. Feeding wrappers. The wrappers are drawn from the base of a storage receptacle 12, Figs. 1 and 8, by rubber pads 20 on a resilient arm 19 pivoted to a block 17 mounted on the reciprocating carriage 2. As soon as the arm 19 commences to move away from the receptacle 12, a pawl 21 pivoted on the arm is turned by engagement with the fixed plate 23, thus raising the arm 19 slightly and causing the pads 20 to take the lowest wrapper and carry it forward beneath a resilient plate 24 extending from the receptacle 12. Directly the pads 20 leave the plate 24 the pawl 21 drops in a slot 25 in the plate 23, thus allowing the arm 19 to fall and to deposit the wrapper over the aperture 26.
