Abstract

518,450. Alkyl phenols. GROVES, W. W. (Monsato Chemical Co.). Sept. 29, 1938, No. 28345. [Class 2 (iii)] Alkyl phenols of the benzene series are manufactured by subjecting the sodium salt of -the aromatic sulphonic acid corresponding with the desired phenol to fusion with sodium hydroxide in the presence of the sodium salt of another aromatic sulphonic acid or the sodium salt of a phenol. In examples (1) 2.4 molecular proportions of sodium hydroxide and 1 molecular proportion of a mixture of sodium benzene sulphonate and sodium p-toluene (equimolecular proportions) are fused together at 300-350‹ C. giving a mixture of phenol and p-cresol. (2) As in (1) but the sulphonates are used in the proportions, 1 of sodium benzene sulphonate to 4 of sodium p-toluene sulphonate. (3) as in (1) but replacing the sodium benzene sulphonate by the sodium salt of phenol or (in (4)) by the sodium salt of p-cresol. Instead of the sodium benzene sulphonate there may also be used the sodium salts of other aromatic sulphonic acids and phenols, including the sodium salts of isopropylphenol, p-tertiaryamylphenol and other cresols. An alternative method of working is to fuse together sodium benzene sulphonate and sodium hydroxide, then add sodium p-toluene sulphonate and fuse further to give the p-cresol. Or sodium hydroxide is added to a residue of sodium phenate resulting from a phenol fusion. After melting this mass, sodium p-toluenesulphohate is added and the fusion continued until the toluenesulphonate is converted to p-cresol.
