Abstract
517,274. Rubber compositions. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. June 17,1938, No.18110. Convention date, June 17, 1937. [Class 70] [Also in Group III] Carbon blacks and lamp blacks of commerce and carbon black which has been heat-. activated in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, which have a distinctly acid pH when formed into a sludge, and which have been caused to take up fixed alkaline substances or neutral substances of which an alkaline part is adapted to be adsorbed by the carbon may be added to rubber compositions. The black is treated with sufficient of a solution of the substance to give a product which in an aqueous sludge has a pH of between 6.0 and 9.0 and is then freed from the solution. The subtances must be " fixed " in the sense that the alkaline part is not readily vaporized by heat; ammonia and ammonium salts are unsuitable.. Suitable substances are alkali and alkaline earth hydroxides and salts such as carbonates, phosphates, silicates, borates, and also neutral salts such as sodium chloride and potassium chloride. When salts such as these chlorides are used a thorough washing is necessary to remove free acid which is formed by the adsorption. By admixing the treated slurry with gasoline and as described in Specification 327,979, [Class 90], the carbon black may be formed into granules or pellets.
