Abstract

516,985. Closures for containers. TUGWOOD, R. J. (American Flange & Manufacturing Co., Inc.). July 15, 1938, No. 21059. [Class 125 (iii)] Closures for containers, such as drums, barrels and the like, have closure plugs 4, 7 to close the filling opening in the container wall 2 and a non- return valve 16 which permits only discharge to occur. The container is filled when all the closure parts are removed, and the plug 4 with its attached valve casing 17 is then screwed into place; a gasket 5 ensures the formation of a tight joint. The plug 7 is then screwed into position in the dependent flange 6 of the plug 4, which may be' secured to the container by sealed wires passing through the holes 11 so that the plugs cannot be removed and replaced without evidence of the removal' being apparent. The whole closure may be surmounted by a skirted cap 13. The valve casing consists of two parts, soldered together, and the spherical base has a circular hole normally occupied by the valve body 16 which may be made of wood and have a lead filling.. Two oppositely extending baffles 22, 23 with flanged edges, are arranged in the casing to prevent the valve body 16 from being manipulated by any tool inserted when the plug 7 is removed. Internal lugs 9, 10 are provided to enable the plugs 4, 7 to be easily rotated. To discharge the container the cap 13 is removed, the plug 7 unscrewed, and the container tilted. The valve permits discharge but prevents refilling. Specification 391,051 is referred to.
