EBUNG FOR BARRELS.
moaeai. I
Application filed July 20,
To all wkoni it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HOOPER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs for Barrels, of which the following is a specifieation.
The present invention relates to bungs for barrels, casks and the like, and an object thereof is to provide in connection with the bung a sealing device which will prevent the removal of the bung except upon the mutilation of the seal.-
To this and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a face view of the bung without the seal; i
Fig. 2 is a similar'v'iew with the seal in place;
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the seal; Fig. 4 is a diametric section of the seal; Fig. 5 is a diametric section through the V seal,-the bung and the bung hole ring, the
tool for applying the seal being shown in dotted lines r Fig. 6 is a face View of another bung to which another embodiment of the invention is applied;
Fig. 7 is a face view of the seal applied to the bung shown in Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the seal before its application to the bung; and
Fig. 9 is a diametric section through the seal, the bung and the bung hole ring, showing th seal applied.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a fragment of a barrel or cask, which in this instance is made of sheet metal and has a bung hole formed in a ring or spud 2'secured to the cask, the walls of the bung hole being internally threaded. A bung 3 in the form of a plug with external threads, engages the internal threads of the bung hole and is also provided with an annular flange 4 abutting the bottom of an annular groove or pocket 5 surrounding the bung hole. The bung is fitted in and Specification of Letters Patent.

removed from the bung hole through a wrench fitted into a non-circular pocket 6 formed in the outer face of the bung." This pocket is surrounded by an annular seat 7 which in turn is partially overhung by an overhanging portion 8 of circular form. The seal, before application to the bung, is in the form of a concavo-convex circular disk 9 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, which may have its central-portion provided with an advertisement or other suitable matter. In fitting the seal disk to the bung, it is inserted within the annular. overhanging portion 8 to rest against the seat '7 and the tool 10 illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 5 is-so formed at its end that when hit with a blow it will shape the disk in the manner illustrated in Fig. 5, driving the edge of the disk against the seat and under the overhanging portion without at the same time destroying the matter at the center of the disk. It will be apparent that this disk will entirely 'cover the wrench socket 6 and will prevent the use of a wrench in the socket until the disk is destroyed or mutilated.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, the bung hole ring 2 is the same as in the other embodiment. The bung 3 differs ,from the bung of the other embodiment in having its pocket 6 not surrounded by a seat and overhanging portion. The seal 9 is in the form of a disk with a ring shaped portion 9 connected thereto by a neck portion 9.
The disk portion 9 has a perforated ear 9 and the ring portion 9 has a projecting perforated ear 9 The ring portion is fitted about the bung so as to lie between the flange at and the shoulder formed by the bottom of the annular groove or pocket 5. The connecting portion 9 extends around one edge of the flange 4 so that the disk portion 9 covers the socket 6 The two perforated ears 9 and 9" are brought into overlapping relation and a. sealing device 11 formed of solder or other suitable material is then introduced through the openings in the ears.
to hold the two ends of the seal together. It is apparent that the wrench cannot be introduced into the wrench socket 6* until the seal is broken.
In both embodiments of the invention the pexternally threaded portion and providing a surrounding seat, the body being provided with a wrench socket opening at the outer face of the body and closed at the inner end, and a disk covering said wrench socket to prevent the use thereof except through the destruction of the disk.
2. A bung for barrels comprising a body having an externally threaded portion at the inner end and asurrounding flange at 20 the outer end providing a seat about the body, the body also being provided with a wrench socket in its outer face and closed at its inner end, and a seat at the outer end of the wrench socket, an-overhanging wall 25 surrounding said seat, and a disk covering said wrench socketand resting against the seat under said overhanging wall.
