Abstract

516,244. Two-part couplings; moulding electric couplings. COOK, C. R. June 22, 1938, No. 18595. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group V] In moulding a contact formed as a split pin into a rubber body as described in Specification 403,448, means are provided to prevent the rubber from entering betweer the prongs cf the cortact. This may be done by using a mould having a strip 3 to support the contacts. 1 during the moulding, a tongue 4 extending along the slit between the prongs of each contact as far as the eye. The strip 3 fits into recesses in the two halves of a mould 5 into which the rubber is forced by a plunge 9 and then vulcanized by heating. Spew holes 10 are provided. Alternatively th prongs of the pin may be pressed together during mould ing, or the eye may be filled with a plug of fusible alloy o other material which may be fused or dissolved out after the moulding operation. In order to prevent the leads 2 being pulled away from the contacts during moulding, the contacts are slit at the ends 1a, Fig. 6, and compressed on to the leads which may also be secured with solder. Anchoring of the contacts in the rubber may be strengthened by passing an insulating bar 11, Fig. 7, through the eyes of the contacts 1 or by screwing the contacts on to a strip of insulation. The pins may be coated with nickel or solder where in contact with the rubber.
