Abstract

516,026. Well appliances. TRIGGS, W. W. (Baker Oil Tools, Inc.). June 27, 1938, No. 18967.' Addition to 516,027. [Class 85] The device for use in cementing, re-pressuring or other operations in wells as claimed in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of hydraulic cylinder and piston means to release some of the anchoring means, and packing means, adapted to be expanded by longitudinal compression only, acting to release other of said anchoring means by subsequent relative longitudinal motion. A body 11 has at its lower end a valve 15 pressed by a spring 19 and initially held open by a shear pin 30 connected to a trunnion 29 depending from a sleeve 24 also held by a shear pin 32 and abutting against a stop pin 31. A packer 33 surrounds the body 11 and is held between a lower fixed ring 34 and an upper slidable ring 36 containing a spring latch ring 37 adapted to co-operate with latch grooves 36b on the body. Above the packer is a slip and slip-sleeve 'construction as described in the parent Specification; the slips 40 are originally held in their inoperative positions by shear pins 42, 43, and the sleeve 38 by a shear pin 44. The sleeve 38 also carries a spring latch ring 46 adapted to co-operate with the latch grooves 36b. Above the slips is an annular piston 55, Figs. 1 and 3, or a cylindrical piston 57b, Fig. 5, may be arranged above alternate slips. In use, after lowering the device to the desired point by tubing 49, a ball 27 is dropped on to sleeve 24, and pressure is built up in the body 11 to act through port 58 to depress piston 55 or pistons 57b to shear pins 43, and alternate slips 40 are then depressed to hold the device against upward movement. The pressure is then relieved and an upward pull applied to shear pin 44 and free slip sleeve 38; the ring 36 then engages the remaining slips to shear pins 42 and the slips move upwardly to hold the sleeve 38 against downward movement. Continued pull causes ring 36 to engage sleeve 38 and the packer 33 is expanded, latch rings 37, 46, engaging grooves 36b to hold the body 11 against relative downward movement. Higher pressure is then built up in the body 11 to shear pins 30, 32, and the sleeve 24 falls, while the spring 19 closes the valve 15. A ball is dropped on to seat 23 if the device is to be used as a bridge plug.
