[Class 70] [Also in Group VIII] A nitrocellulose coating is secured to rubber or rubberized sheet materials by one or more bonding coats consisting of or containing polyvinyl phthalate. Rubber surfaces of poor adhesion may be provided with a priming coat, e.g. of highly-filled rubber latex or vulcanized rubber composition or a'thin unvulcanized coating of rubber solution or latex with or without fillers. The polyvinyl phthalate may be applied in solution in an organic solvent and a softening-agent may be included. The coating may be baked after drying. The products are suitable for upholstery &c. Examples are given of the application of a toluene solution of polyvinyl phthalate, with or without methyl cellosolve phthalate as softening-agent, calendered rubber sheet, rubberized fabric and latex-impregnated paper,the rubber sheet being primed with a solution of rubber in toluene.
