HARRY J. HAON, 0F NEWBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO DU PONT FABRIKOID COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A. CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE.
COATED PRODUCT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
' Application led January 28, 1916. Serial No. 74,735.
the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Coated Products, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to sheets of coated'materials, such as woven fabrics,
artificial leather, paper and leather, but es-k pecially to coated artificial leather.
Ilhe object of my invention is to provide' a coated fabric in the form of a sheet, which is of -such a nature that it may be readily caused to adhere to other surfaces. More particularly, the object of my invention is to provide a product of this character, which is especially useful in bookbinding,V and to which gold-leaf and paper may be readily caused to adhere. A further object of my invention is to provide a pyroxylin coated productwhich, under the influence of heat or water or some other solvent, becomes readily adherent to substances or materials applied to the surface thereof.
While my invention is capableof being carried out in many different Ways, for the purpose of illustration l shall describe only one example thereof hereinafter.
'In the drawings, the single gure showsv the perspective view of a fabric treated according to my invention.
My invention may, for example, be carried out as follows: Any suitable backing, which may be awoven "fabric, paper, or leather, and which may or may not already have been coated with one or more coats of various materials, but which is Ipreferably an artificial leather formed on a woven fabric backing by applying one or more coats of a pyroxylin solution containing 10.02. by weight of pyroxylin, 1" gal. of solvent, comprising 15% .of amyl acetate and 85% of wood alcohol or 50% amyl acetate and 50% benzene, and which may contain any suitable pigment, is provided with a top coating containing pyroxlyn 10 oz. by weight, 1 gal. of a solvent comprising 15% amyl acetate and 85% wood alcohol or 50% amyl acetate and 50% of benzene, and one pound of a fish glue solution containing 50% of glue and 50% -of water, to which may be added, if de sired, one oz. of birch tar or some similar essential oil to remove the odor of the fish glue and give the product an odor the same as that of Russian leather. Any other suitable adhesive material mayalso be added to the composition in this coating either in addition to or in substitution for the fish glue solution, as for example gums, such as t sandarac and shellac. rlhe coating or coate ings above referred to may be applied in Vany suitable way, as for example, by the use of a doctor blade, rolling, brushing, or flowing, and the coating containing the adhesive material may be applied before or'after embossing. f A product made in this manner, will readily adhere to materials placed upon the same under the influence of heat or moisture or both. The coated product thus produced is especially suitable for use in bookb-inding as gold-leaf Will readily adhere to thepsame when applied by a lettering tool, which has been previously heated to a mod erate degree in the usual way. It Will also readily adhere to paper, as for example, a
paper which is applied to the inner faces mixture of pyroxylin and an adhesive, por? -tions of said adhesive being exposed at the surface of the coated. product.
2. A coated product clomprising a backing havin a coating containing aA mixture of pyroxy in and anadhesive, adapted to become adherent under the influence of heat,
portions of said adhesive'being exposed at ythe surface of, the coated product.
3. A coated product comprlsing a backin l having a coating containing a mixture o pyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherent under the iniiuence of heat from 'a lettering tool heated to the usual temperature, portions of saidadhesive being exposed at the surface of the coated product.
4. A coated product comprising a backing having a coating containing a mixture o ed product.
pyroxylin Aand fish glue.
6. A coated product comprising a backing of Woven fabric having a coating containing a mixture of pyroxylinl and an adhesi-ve. l
7. A coated product comprisinlga backing of Woven fabric having a coating containing a mixture of pyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherent undery the infiuence of heat.
8./A coa-ted product comprisinga back ing of Woven fabric having a coating con-I taining a mixture of pyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherent under the influence of heat from a lettering tool heated to the usual temperature, portions of said adhesive being exposed at the surface of the coated product. i
y9. A coated product comprising a backling of Woven fabric having a coating containing a mixture of pyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherent upon the application of (Water, portions of said adhesive being exposed at the surface of the coat- 10. A coated product comprising-a backing of Woven fabric having an outer coat- I liti 11. A coated product comprising a backcontaining a mixture of pyroxylin and glue.
ing of woven fabric already provided with a pyroxylin coating and .on top of the same' Aof said adhesive beinl havin a coating containing pyroxylin and an ad esive. l
'12. A vcoated product comprising a backing of Woven fabric already provided with a pyroxylin coating and on top ofthe same havin a coating containing pyroxylin and an a esive, adapted. to becomeadheremJ under .the influence of heat.
13. A coated product comprisin a backing of xWoven fabric already provi ed With a pyroxylin-coating and on 'top of the same 4having a coating containing pyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherent under the influence of heat from a lettering tool heated to the usual temperature.
14. A coated product comprising abacking of Woven fabric' already) provided With a pyroxylin coating and on top of the same having a coating'containingfpyroxylin and an adhesive, adapted to become adherentupon the applicationof Water.
15. A coated product comprising a backing of Woven fabric already provided With a pyroxylin coating and on top of the same having a coatingcontaining pyroxylin andr fish glue. i
16. A coated product comprising a Woven fabric backing having a surface coating containing-a mixture of pyroxylin and an adhesive adapted to be made adherent either by the application of heat or Water, portions exposed at the surface of the coated pro uct. i.
