Abstract
515,290. Auomatic pilots. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. June 16, 1938, No. 17917. Convention date, June 19, 1937. [Class 135] A control system for a control surface of a craft such as an aircraft rudder comprises a servo-motor operating under the control of remote valve means, whereby the surface is moved in accordance with the forces operating on the valve means, and means for directly applying fluid pressure, arising from back pressure on the control surface, to the valve means in opposition to the controlling forces acting thereon, whereby the movement of the control surface is limited. Movement of the craft with respect to a gyroscopic direction indicator 1 causes a semi-circular plate 5 to vary diametrically opposite openings 6, 7 connected respectively to diaphragm chambers 17<1>, 17 and the differential pressure acting on the diaphragms 40<1>, 40 displaces a rod 18 carrying piston valves 19, 20, 21. The valves 19. 21 cover inlet ports 25, 26 for pressure fluid introduced through a pipe 24 and displacement of the valve rod 18 uncovers one or other of the ports 25, 26 to put it intocommunication with one or other of pipes 28, 29 leading to a servo-motor 30, the pipe 29, 28 not so used being connected by movement of the valve 20 with a return pipe 27. A rate-of-turn indicator 11 is coupled in parallel with the direction indicator 1 to co-operate in actuating the valves, cocks 15, 15<1>, 16, 16<1> being provided to determine the relative effectiveness of the indicators. The servo-motor 30 controls a rudder &c. R and the increased resistance of the rudder as it moves further from its normal position builds up pressure in the servo-motor, this pressure acting back. through the conduit 28, 29 to open a ball valve 34 in a passage 33, 35 leading behind the adjacent piston 19, 21 to check further movement of the servo-motor. A bellows communicating with the passage 35 acts as a pressure accumulator to prolong the opposition pressure.
