Abstract
515,282. Cartons. BARLOW, R., and MORGAN, G. W. L. June 14, 1938, No. 17718. [Class 66] The tubular body portion of a carton of rectangular polygonal, or circular cross-section is-closed by a lap joint the lower portion of the outer part of which is, for the whole or part of the length of the joint, left unattached by the weak adhesive used, to facilitate. opening the carton. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the ends of the lower edge of the free portion 5 are cut away at 8 so that this part is left free to start a tear along the edge weakenings 6 to open the carton. In this form the ends of the body are gripped between the doubled flanges 3 of the sheet metal end portions 2, one of the inner flanges being recessed at 9 to accomodate the lap joint In the construction of Fig. 3 tongues 5 afforded by cuts 11 are left free to enable the lower outer part of the lap joint to be torn away along the weakened line 10 so loosening the joint and enabling opening along the lines 6 to take place. In this form the ends are integral with the body of the carton and are secured in position by a doubled metal ring 3a. The weakening line may be formed by cutting in the blank I-shaped incisions as shown, the tongues formed by which are thereafter rolled back into the blank before it is treated with wax or other sealing or proofing material, Alternatively, longitudinally or transversely disposed end tongues may be provided in this construction, in place of the tongues 5.
