515,111. Pistons; connecting-rods. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 24, 1938, No. 15436. Convention date, July 19, 1937. [Class 122 (i)] In steam engines, pumps, compressors, and reciprocating machines, pistons are connected by ball joints to connecting-rods so that the oscillations thereof impart rotary motion to the pistons. The piston 1 is coupled to a connecting- rod 2 which is coupled through a beam 3 and another connecting-rod to a crank-shaft. The rod 2 has a spherical head 4 housed in socket members 5, 6 arranged between a shoulder 7 on the piston head and a screwed collar 8. A cylindrical sleeve 10 is housed in the piston and held by a pin 11 against rotation. Split, expanding spring-rings 12, 13 frictionally engage the sleeve 10. Eccentric pins 17, 18 on a rigidly secured bolt 19 engages bores 15, 16 in the rings 12, 13. The oscillations of the rod 2 oscillate the rings 12, 13. The bores 15, 16 are adjacent the slits 14. The movement of the pins 17, 18 in one direction relative to the slits expand the rings 12, 13 and cause piston rotation, but not in the other direction. The outer surfaces of the rings are grooved to prevent oil destroying the frictional grip. Alternatively oscillating-rings lying around and frictionally engaging a cylindrical piston-part may rotate the piston.
