[Class 143] Relieving and locking mechanism.-In a weighing scale wherein the pans are carried at opposite ends of a beam 10, a cranked arm 22 and stop 26 rotated by a handle 25 are situated beneath one pan support 12 so that the stop 26, in the position shown, limits the pan's downward movement, and on rotation of the handle to relieve the beam an antifriction roller 23 lifts the pan support 12 to its locked position. During the upward movement of the -pan support 12, the pan support at the other end of the beam descends on to. a pair of fixed buffers, the pan support 12 is raised off its knife-edges 14, and cover plates 16 engage the backs of the knifeedges and lift the beam so that its fulcrum knifeedges 14<1> are raised trom their seatings. Further upward movement of the beam brings the backs of the knife-edges 14<1> into engagement with their cover plates 16<1>' and tilts the beam until the knife-edges at the other end of the beam leave their seatings thus relieving all the knife-edges and locking the scale parts against movement. The roller 23 may pass beyond its. highest point until the cranked part 22a of the arm 22 engages the pan support so that the crank is self-locked.
