514,424. Extracting oils ; preserving oilcontaining organic material. HOPKINSON, L. T. Jan. 22, 1938, No. 2199. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1937. [Class 91] Fresh protein material from which oil is to be extracted, is continuously treated with a combination of a base and a germicide to prevent bacterial action. Suitable bases are sodium hydrate and carbonate. Specified inhibitors are formaldehyde, phenol, resorcinol, para nitro-phenol, cresol, alcohol, and potassium dichromate. For example, fish livers are submerged in an aqueous solution containing 2-3 kg. each of formaldehyde and of Na2CO3 10H2O for each 100 kg. of fish. The oil may be extracted by solvents, by cooking and pressing, or by pressure cold. Cooking is advantageously effected under pressure or in presence of an acid, an acid buffer salt, or a salt such as calcium or magnesium chloride, or a mixture of calcium chloride with ferric nitrate or chloride. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use alone of a solution of base, a germicide, or a substance which is both. Suitable germicides are sodium hydrate, carbonate, bicarbonate, silicate, phosphate, arsenite, nitrite, cyanide, potassium hydrate, carbonate, hydrogen sulphate, phosphate or hydrogen-phosphate, nitrite, and borax. For assisting the extraction of the oil there may also be used a mixture of calcium and zinc salts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
