Abstract
514,377. Treating air with radiations. HANOVIA, Ltd., and STODDART, H. J. March 2, 1938, No. 6610. [Class 1 (i)] Apparatus for sterilizing air comprises a cold quartz low-pressure discharge tube b, adapted to give a high percentage of radiation between 2,400-2,800‹A, arranged within a casing a serving as a screen, and means such as a fan i or heating element k to secure a controlled and uniform flow of air. The casing a which is preferably coated with a dull paint, may be mounted within an enclosing casing c adapted to house electrical components. A dust filter h is arranged at the lower end of the casing. To minimize formation of ozone, the heater is operated to maintain a temperature of above 300‹C. ; further a catalyst, e.g., a grille of platinum or silver wire &c. or a cloth filter impregnated, e.g., with iron or manganese oxide may be provided. The tube may be surrounded by, a filter to absorb radiations below 2,000‹A. The casing may be disposed' horizontally or otherwise. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 424,320 and 467,889.
