Abstract

513,115. Adjusting brakes. PRATT, J. H., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. March 18, 1938, No. 8335. [Class 103 (i)], An abutment which determines the position of a friction surface of a disc brake is adapted to be adjusted by means passed through an aperture in a rotating part of the brake. A disc brake comprises a floating disc 14 driven, by a rotating part 11 and adapted to be gripped between a pair of pressure members 13a, 13b splined on the slotted cylindrical flange 12a of the non-rotating part 12. The member 13b is adapted to be moved by the hydraulic operating means 15 and the member 13a abuts on a normally stationary adjusting nut 18 screwed on the flange 12a. A spindle 16 mounted in the member 13a carries a pinion 17 meshing with teeth on the nut and has a non-circular hole 16a into which a tool 20, can be inserted through an aperture 11a in the member 11. Two pinions 17 and spindles and a series of apertures: 11a may be provided whereby one of the spindles is always in register with one of the apertures. To indicate when an aperture is in register with the adjusting means, holes may be formed in fingers or flanges carried by the rotating and non-rotating brake parts and be located by passing a rod through, them or the rotating part may carry a catch emgageable with a notch in the non-rotating part. According to the Provisional Specification a screw-threaded adjusting cone or an adjusting cam mounted on the anchorplate of an internally expanding brake may have a non-circular hole or a squared end for receiving a tool which may be inserted through an aperture in the brake drum and the aperture may have a pivoted cover plate which tends to'close under the action of centrifugal force.
