512,962. Looms with weft inserting needles. CARPET TRADES, Ltd., and READ, E. March 25, 1938, No. 9111. [Class 142 (ii)] In a jacquard Axminster loom of the gripper type, two weft inserting needles 8, 9 guided by slotted tubes 10, 11 are used, the upper needle having an arm 14a with a bracket 14, co-operating with a clamping plate 15 and an endless cord 16, whereby the upper needle is reciprocated. The lower guide tube 11 can be rocked by crank arms 19, a rod 20 and a cam to move a member 17 on the lower needle into and out of engagement with forked part 14b of the bracket 14, whereby the lower needle can be clutched to or unclutched from the upper needle. A weft may be first inserted by the needle 8 and afterwards wefts may be inserted by both needles. A lug 18 with an inclined face 18a ensures correct engagement of the member 17 with the. forked part 14b. Each needle has a tension device comprising clamping members 21 and complementary lever clamping plates 23 connected to cam-controlled bars 23a. The weft passes around spring loaded arms 25. The selvedge shuttles 28, 29 are operated by arms 26, 27 on a vertical spindle, which is oscillated to give a dwell. The shuttles are mounted in vases 33, 34, which carry a guide 35 for reciprocatory cam-operated selvedge needles 31, 32, which engage the weft loops. The tuft yarn knife is made in sections, the healds elongated and the reed slots deepened. -
