512,366. Metal hydroxides. MUNEKATA, E. Sept. 17, 1938, No. 27183. [Class 41] In preparing metal hydroxides such as those of copper or nickel in an electrolytic cell using an anode of the metal and as electrolyte a solution of an alkali salt such as sodium sulphate, the anode 3 is placed in the upper part of the cell and the electrolyte is circulated downwards so that the metal salt formed at the anode will react with the alkali hydrate formed at the cathodes 7 in the neighbourhood of the cathodes. The anode is formed of a metal block with vertical perforations 5 and an encircling rim 6 into which liquid withdrawn by a pipe 2 is returned. Alternatively the anode may be formed by a bundle of metal strips. The cathodes 7 are provided with inverted troughs 8 of insulating material to collect the evolved hydrogen. A stabilizer for the hydroxide, which in the case of copper may be a carbohydrate or a heavy metal salt may be added to the electrolyte.
