Abstract

512,111. Froth flotation processes. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Manville Jenckes Corporation). Dec. 20, 1938, No. 37063. [Class 82 (ii)] Fouled regenerating baths which have been used for the regeneration of hydrated cellulose from viscose and which contain sulphur set free by decomposition of the viscose are clarified by froth flotation, the sulphur and other impurities being removed as a froth. The flotation may be effected by aeration only or with the addition of flotation reagents such as a saturated hydrocarbon, e.g. kerosene, or a dithiophosphoric acid compound. Examples are given showing the clarification of a bath containing when fresh 130 gms. sulphuric acid, 250 gms. sodium sulphate, and 14 gms. zinc sulphate per litre, the flotation being carried out (a) with no flotation reagents, (b) with a dicresyldithio phosphoric acid (Aerofloat 15), (c) with a frother containing a mixture of higher alcohols, (d) with kerosene, and (e) with cresylic acid. The flotation may take place in a mechanical or pneumatic machine.
