Abstract

511,843. Cartons &c. HACKFORD, J. E. Jan. 24, 1938, Nos. 2217 and 15098. [Class 66] [Also in Group VIII] Compound sheet material for making containers comprises a backing sheet or strip 17 of paper or cardboard and a facing sheet or strip 18 of material resistant to moisture, acid, or alkali , secured by a synthetic resin adhesive which is a partial solvent for the facing sheet, the'facing sheet overlapping the backing on one or more of its borders. The adhesive may be a plasticized phenol- or eresol-formaldehyde resin or hydrolysed polyvinyl actetate containing a solvent for the facing sheet which may be of cellulose acetate or regenerated cellulose. The overlapping edge of the facing, or one or more where more than one overlap, may be folded around the edge of the backing and secured thereto, as at 20. A backing strip may have narrower facing strips affixed on opposite sides and at opposite edges thereof, one or both facing strips extending beyond and/or being folded around the edge of the backing. Such strips. are formed into containers the cardboard &c. forming a lap joint or a butt joint, Fig. 12, and the edges of the cellulose acetate sheet being secured together. Alternatively strips may be wound helically on a cylindrical or conical mandrel. The facing sheets may be attached only to a narrow edge portion of the cardboard, so that a container formed by winding on a former first one facing, then the cardboard and finally the other facing has both its inside and outside protected.
