Abstract

430,289. Boxes. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.- (Rochester Folding Box Co. ; Boxart Street, Rochester, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 12, 1934, No. 29267. [Class 18] One side wall of a box, made of corrugated or like board, is formed by substantially aligned extensions 12, 13 on two other side walls 11 connected by a strip 15 adhesively secured to the inner faces of the extensions. A second strip 16 may be secured the outer faces of the extensions 12, 13. The box is made by positioning the strip 15 over the inner face of an intermediate part of the blank, and folding one side 11 and the two extensions 12, 13 over the strip. In a machine for making the boxes, strip 15 is fed from a roll 50, to an adhesive-applying roll 64 on to the box blanks. The extension 12 and side 11 with extension 13, are raised, e.g. by hand, from the horizontal position and are folded over the strip 15 by cams 26. A conical separating device 68 is provided for holding the parts 12, 13 away from the strip 15 until they have been butted, and a wire guard member 74, which prevents upward movement of the blanks, assists in this separation. The second strip 16 is applied to the outer faces of the folded over parts 12, 13 and the folded blank and strip pass between pressure rollers 42, 43 by which the strips are caused to adhere to the parts 12, 13. A brush 47 may be provided for smoothing the outer strip 16. A rotating knife 49 is provided for severing the strips between successive blanks. The blanks are fed forwardly by belt-driven feed rollers 27.
