Abstract
620,945. Paper-bag machines. ROBINSON, Ltd., E. S. & A. DAVIES, K. W., and NICHOLAS, J. Feb. 3, 1947, No. 3218. [Class 94(ii)] A machine for making block bottom bags is provided with a nose-piece 33, for forming the bottom, having a table 62, facing the approaching bag tube, a vertical pillar 64 which has at least a portion displaced to one side of the centre of the line of bag approach, and two fingers 68, 69 which rotate on an axis or axes lying parallel to the line of approach of the bag tube. The fingers are placed one on each side of the nose-piece and are angularly displaced to press downwards two flaps 76, 77 of the bag bottom so that the edge of one overlaps the other, to which it is stuck. The rear edge 66 of the nose-piece is bent outwards to help the overlapping of the flaps 76, 77. Rolls 24, 25 have die and punch means to form a horse-shoe shaped cut in the web 23, drawn from a roll 22. This causes the bag to have a tongue 39, which is secured to the bag bottom, and a thumb notch 47 at the top of a bag to facilitate opening. The web is folded into a tube around a former 29 and a reciprocating bar 37 turns over the tongue 39 which has been forced up by a spring 40. The tube then passes between a cutting roll 32 and a fixed knife 44 where it is severed into bag lengths. The shape of the cut may be varied in different bags. Means to open the leading edge of a bag comprises a bar 48 with tongues 60, 61 which guide the bottom part of the tube under the nose-piece 33 and the upper part over the top of the table 62. The bar is reciprocated by linkage 55, 56 so that it is drawn backwards to clear the cutters 44, 45 during the tube-severing operation. A creasing bar 73 is reciprocated above the tube and below the nose-piece to cause the diamond-shaped bag bottom to fold over.
