Abstract

511,508. Earth-rods. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO. & SMITHS, Ltd., and STARLING, J. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5106. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXII] To prevent buckling and distortion of the upper end of an earthing device in the form of a ribbed rod, such as the rods described in Specifications 423,385 and 430,040 a reinforcing means which tightly engages both the sides and the edges of the ribs is provided on the end of the rod, said reinforcing means consisting of, or comprising, a metal collar, preferably of mild steel, which is fitted over the rod and then forced into close engagement with the ribs. The collar may form a cap for the rod. As shown in Fig. 2, the reinforcing means comprises an internally threaded collar 2 and high carbon steel pins 4, which latter are driven into the spaces between the collar and the ribs of the rod 1 so as tightly to engage the sides of the ribs and also to distort the collar so that the screw-threads thereof bite into the edges of the ribs. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction wherein the pins are dispensed with and the collar is swaged around the sides of the ribs so that the screw-threaded surface of the collar bites into both the sides and edges of the ribs. In a further construction an unthreaded collar is swaged around the ribs, in a similar manner to that shown in Fig. 4, and tightly secured thereto by crimping.
