Abstract

510,684. Coating metals. PYRENE CO., Ltd., CLIFFORD, W. J., and ADAMS, H. H. Feb. 4, 1938, Nos. 3634/38 and 2901/39. [Class 82 (ii)] The action of phosphate coating solutions or coating solutions containing the acid radical of an aliphatic dicarboxylic or hydroxydicarboxylic acid or of an aromatic carboxylic, phenolic-carboxylic, or sulphonic acid is accelerated by means of an accelerating compound in which there is a non-ionic group, other than a cyanide or isocyanide group, which, if substituted into a benzene ring would be electronattracting or would have a meta-directing influence to typical electrophilic reagents, this group being attached directly to hydrogen or a hydrocarbon residue or attached to a hydrocarbon residue through the agency of a single nitrogen atom. The group may be, for example, a nitro, nitroso, amine-oxide, trichlormethyl, or aldehyde group and, where it is attached to a hydrocarbon residue, this residue may be substituted or unsubstituted. If substituted the substituent groups must not be such that the accelerating effect is destroyed.. Accelerating compounds referred to are picric acid, nitroguanidine, hydroxylamine, trichloracetic acid and its esters, nitrobenzene, nitromethane, nitrourea, nitrourethane, nitranilines, nitrophenols, nitrobenzoic acids, nitroso-N-methylurethane, p-nitroso-dimethylaniline, p-nitrosophenol, benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, chloral, m-dinitrobenzene, and nitroresorcinols. Other accelerators, e.g., copper or other metallic accelerators, or oxidizing agents such as nitrates, e.g., zinc nitrate, or nitrites may also be present. With some of the accelerators, e.g., nitroguanidine, the coating can be carried out in the cold. The solutions may be applied by spraying, brushing, flowing, or immersion methods.
