Abstract

510,310. Making emulsions. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2250/39. Divided out of 510,318. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Secondary amines containing at least two aliphatic hydrocarbon radicles each containing at least three carbon atoms and together containing at least eight carbon atoms attached to nitrogen are treated with phosgene and the condensation products reacted with an organic aminocarboxylic, aminosulphonic or hydroxysulphonic acid, an amino sulphuric acid ester or with an organic aminopolyhydroxy compound. The secondary amines may be obtained from the following carboxylic acids : fatty acids such as isobutyric, isovalerianic, caprylic, palmitic, oleic, ricinoleic, and oc-ethylhexylic acid, carboxylic acid mixtures obtained by the oxidation of paraffin or by treating the mixtures obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon 'oxides, with alkali, carboxylic acids obtained by treating carbon mono- or dioxide with steam in the presence of an olefine and hydrogen and by saponifying nitriles resulting from the treatment of a halogenated hydrocarbon with potassium cyanide. Amines may also be prepared from halogenated hydrocarbons and ammonia or amines. The products are stated to be useful as emulsifying agents and may be used in association with soap, mucilage, glue, soluble cellulose derivatives, starch, bentonite, saponine, solvents such as butanol or xylenylglycol, sodium carbonate, Glauber's salt, sodium pyrophosphate, trisodiumphosphate, sodium metaphosphate, sodium perborate and sodium hypochlorite. In examples : (1) di-isoheptylamine is reacted with phosgene in the presence of chlorbenzene saturated with hydrochloric acid and the resulting di-isoheptylcarbamic acid chloride condensed with sodium methyltaurine. (2) di-(#-ethylhexyl) amine is reacted with phosgene and the resulting carbamic acid chloride condensed with sodium butyltaurine; the latter may be replaced by isobutyltaurine, #-ethylhexyltaurine, sulphanilic acid, metanilic acid or ethanolamine sulphuric ester. (3) n-butyltetradecylcarbamic acid chloride is condensed with sodium sarcosine. (4) a mixture of carbamic acid chlorides prepared from secondary amines obtained from carboxylic acids resulting from the oxidation of paraffin is condensed with metanilic acid. The following components are mentioned: methylglucamine, hydroxyethanesulphonic acid and albumin decomposition products.
