Abstract

510,308. Making emulsions. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2248/39. Divided out of 510,318. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Polycarboxylic acids, free from substituent hydrocarbon radicles having more than four carbon atoms' are reacted with secondary amines containing two aliphatic hydrocarbon radicles each having four or more carbon atoms and together containing at least twelve carbon atoms and not more than 24 carbon atoms so as to produce acid amides having at least one free carboxylic group. The secondary amines may be obtained from the following carboxylic acids, e.g., by hydrogenating the nitriles derived therefrom : fattv acids such as isobutyric, isovalerianic. caproic, caprylic, capric lauric and # -ethylhexylic acid, carboxylic acid mixtures obtained by the oxidation of mineral oils or by treating the mixtures obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon oxides, with alkali ; carboxylic acids obtained by treating carbon mono- or dioxide with steam in the presence of an olefine and hydrogen and by saponifying nitriles resulting from the treatment of a halogenated hydrocarbon with potassium cyanide. Amines may also be prepared from halogenated hydrocarbons and ammonia and amines. The products are stated to be emulsifying agents and may be used in association with soaps, mucilage, glue, soluble cellulose derivatives, starch, bentonite, saponine, solvents such as butanol or xylenyl glycol, sodium carbonate, Glauber's salt, trisodium phosphate, sodium pyro- and meta phosphate, sodium perborate and sodium hypochlorite. In examples : (1) diglycollic anhydride is reacted with butyldodecylamine and with a secondary amine obtained by condensing n-butylamine with a chlorinated product obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of coal: (2) succinic anhydride is reacted with di (oc -ethylhexyl) amine : (3) pyridine - 2 : 3 : 5 : 6 - tetracarboxylic acid anhydride is reacted with a mixture of secondary amines derived from carboxylic acids obtained by the oxidation of paraffin. The following components are mentioned : di (n-hexyl) amine, di (iso-hexyl) amine, di- #-ethylhexylamine, dioctylamine, didodecylamine, oxalic acid, maleic acid, thiodiglycollic acid, dithiodiglycollic acid, phthalic acid, sulphophthalic acid arid sulphosuccinic acid.
