Abstract

510,282. Crimping; artificial silk. COURTAULDS, Ltd;, and COBB, H. P. April 27, 1938, Nos. 12555 and 12556. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Threads are crimped by delivering them on to the outer surface 6, Fig. 1, of an endless moving conveyer 3 at a point where the peripheral speed is greater than the linear speed of the inner surface of the conveyer, carrying the thread along until the peripheral speed has been reduced to the lower linear speed, fixing. the crimp and removing the crimped thread, as at 8. The speed of delivery of the thread on to the conveyer may be equal to, or greater than, the peripheral speed of the conveyer. The conveyer may consist of a thick flexible band, as in Fig. 1 with or without transverse cuts, or a series of transverse slats 3, Fig. 12, mounted on a flexible backing; in this embodiment the thread may be forced into the open slots of the conveyer by air or liquid blasts from jets 12. The threads may be subjected to further liquid treatment, e.g., to complete the coagulation of artificial silk threads, by liquid from spraying devices 10. The crimp is fixed, e.g., by liquid or heat treatment, and whilst such fixing is taking place the crimp may be held by mechanical pressure, e.g., by rollers or a travelling belt.
