[Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for flanging a flat workpiece means is provided for bending over the flange step by step and for pressing the flange in the direction of the periphery to prevent the formation of wrinkles. The workpiece 3 secured to a template 4 is positioned and clamped by a member 6, actuated by a cam 8, against an abutment 5. A cam 11 then raises a member 13 to bend the edge of the workpiece to the position shown in Fig. 2 and to locate a pressure member 15 in alignment with the flange and a similar pressure member on the abutment 5. The pressure members have V- faces co-operating with pressure pads, Fig. 3, not shown. Axial movement of the members 15 when a toggle 20, 23 is straightened by a cam 16 results in an ironing motion of the pressure pads in the direction of the periphery to prevent wrinkles. In a modification Fig. 4, not shown, a press head descends to effect flanging, an inclined face causes the pressure against the flange and arcuate members iron the wrinkles. In a further modification, Fig. 8, not shown, a hand operated clamp is pivoted to effect the step by step flanging. The swinging motion is arrested and further pressure on a hand lever actuates V-faced pressure pads to prevent wrinkles.
