Abstract

509,471. Injectors and ejectors. GAGE, A. M. Jan. 13, 1938, No. 1218. Convention date,. Oct. 20, 1937. [Class 71] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XII] An apparatus for producing pulsations of fluid, particularly sound vibrations, comprises a chamber having an inlet orifice connected to a source of fluid under pressure, an outlet passage extending into the interior of the chamber and forming an annular seat to co-operate with a light but rigid flap valve which is freely movable to bear alternately upon this seat and another annular seat thereby forming a closure for a chamber containing a fluid under pressure to repel the valve to the other seat, the inlet orifice opening on to the side of the valve which faces the outlet passage. As shown in Fig. 1 fluid under pressure is admitted through an opening 8 controlled by valve 9 to a chamber 2 having an opening 4 closed by a flap valve 5 which in its upper position also closes the outlet 3 to nozzle 1. On increase of pressure in the chamber 2, . the valve 5 moves to its lower position closing a chamber 7 to which fluid is fed at a pressure intermediate between that of the supply to the inlet 8 and that in the nozzle 1. After escape of fluid from the nozzle, the valve moves to its upper position when the pressure in the chamber 2 falls due to fluid passing through the nozzle 1. In a modification, Fig. 2, similar chambers 2, 2a and nozzles 1, 1a are provided on opposite sides of the valve 4 formed with central tapering bosses 10 which facilitate the automatic centring of the valve on its seat in its alternate positions. The inlets 8, 8a to the chambers 2, 2a are fed from the same source of pressure. In a further modification Fig. 3 (not shown), a pivoted flap-valve co-operates with two chambers and nozzles arranged on the same side of the valve and co-operating with inlets to the chambers connected to a common source of fluid under pressure. The device may be incorporated in an injector in which the nozzle for a motive fluid is replaced by a fluid vibrator similar to that shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 7, a fluid vibrator, similar to that described in connection with Fig. 2, is mounted in a chamber having suction inlet 12 and diverging outlets 11, 11 a, the fluid drawn in at the orifice 12 being passed through mixing chambers 13, 13a prior to its discharge from the nozzles 11, 11a.
