Abstract
509,319. Thermostats. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and WALKER, C. BELL-. Jan. 13, 1938, No. 1230. [Class 135] A thermostically controlled valve for gas ovens &c. is actuated by a coiled thermosensitive element either bi-metallic strip or fluid filled Bourden tube has the adjusting rod secured to one end of the thermosensitive element and connected by gearing with a manually actuated stopcock in series with the thermally controlled valve. The other end of the sensitive element is coupled to a rotary valve adapted to move transversly across a ported seating without touching the same. In the form shown in the Figure the regulating valve which comprises a segmental tapered member 35 is adapted to co-operate with a port 31 in a tapered seat 33 and is formed with a long boss 36. This boss is secured to one end of the thermal element 40 and is rotatably mounted on an adjusting rod 37 secured to the other end of the thermal element and on the boss of a gear wheel 39 secured to the rod 37. The gear wheel 39 meshes with a double pinion 42, 44 mounted on a pin 43 carried by a fixed ported plate 29 while the pinion 44 meshes with teeth formed on the end of a sleeve 22 rotatably mounted on the rod 37. This sleeve has a coned port frictionally engaging a mating surface formed in the plug 14 of the stop cock. The plug is held to its seat and the'coned surfaces in contact by a spring washer 27 arranged between a fixed part of the casing and a hub 15 for the regulating knob 16 keyed to the plug and bearing through a washer 26 on a nut 25 screwed to the sleeve. The clearance of the valve member 35 which serves as a bye-pass is adjusted by manipulating nuts 47 on the rod 37 against the action of a spring 46. In a modification the regulating valve has a pair of segmental flanges adapted to co-operate with both inlet and outlet ports. In this form the stopcock is arranged alongside the regulating valve. In a further modification the segmental conical valve is replaced by a series of apertured plates interleaved between a series of fixed apertured plates.
