Abstract
509,150. Sewing-machines. KESSLER, P. P. Jan. 11, 1938, No. 916. [Class 112] In a sewing-machine having feed rollers operated step by step, the rollers may be actuated alternatively by a ratchet clutch, providing a number of predetermined rates of feed, and a friction clutch, permitting adjustment of the feed to any value. The sewing machine shown in Fig. 5, is of the blind-stitch type having a curved needle 56, looper 55 and feed-plate 49 carried by the upper part 12 of the frame and feed rollers 25 carried by the base 11 to hold the work against the plate 49 ; a centre guide 26, against which the edges of two pieces of work to be connected are bent up, projects between the two feed rollers 25, and a work-supporting table 64, to which an auxiliary work-support may be attached, is provided. The upper part 12 of the frame, carrying the operating shaft 52, is hinged at 13 to the lower part 11 to allow limited lifting of the machine head by a pedal-operated crank 19 engaging an arm 20 adjustably secured to the part 12. feed rollers 25, Fig. 2, are driven by a shaft 42 carrying a ratchet clutch element 35 and a roller clutch element 23, and are connected by universal joints 28 and supported by resilient mountings 82, as shown, so that they can accommodate different thicknesses of material. The ratchet clutch element 35 is actuated by a pitman 34, lever 33 and eccentric rod 67 from the shaft 52, the stroke of the pitman 34 being adjustable by means of a bolt and slot connection between the members 67, 33 ; the ratchet clutch is put out of action by a cam lever 90, which moves the pitman 34 clear of the ratchet against a spring 91<1>. The roller clutch element 23 is actuated by an arm adjustably pivoted to a link 88 which has a bolt and slot connection with an arm 87 on a shaft 91 oscillated from the shaft 52 by an eccentric rod 48 and arm 41; the stroke of the link 88 is varied by shifting its connection with the arm 87, and may be reduced to zero by this means so that the clutch is ineffective.
