508,978. Arrangements of tubes in marine-type boiler combustion chambers; steam superheaters. MARINE & LOCOMOTIVE SUPERHEATERS, Ltd., and MELHUISH, H. Jan. 13, 1938, No. 1166. [Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii)] Multiple U-loop superheater elements 6 are disposed verti cally between water circulating tubes 3 and the back wall 5 of ai external combustion chamber of a marine boiler, the superheater headers 7, 8 being positioned above the combustion chamber to permit the elements to be inserted and withdrawn through an aperture or apertures in the top wall with removable closures 11 without passing through a flue or the spaces between the water-tubes. The headers which are ar ranged in a housing 9 with a hinged or removable cover 10, may have their jointing surfaces uppermost (as shown) or be arranged one above the other with the jointing surfaces facing the boiler back plate or away from it. The elements are supported by nuts 14 on threaded sleeves 13 welded to the elements, the nuts which may have a spherical lower face bearing on seats round holes in the plates 11. Or the elements may be suspended by slings from overhead supports. A baffle 16 extending from angle bars 17 on the back plate to the water-tubes and transversely from side to side of the combustion chamber between the openings of the furnace flues and smoke tubes may have one or more pivoted sections to allow combustion gases to byepass the superheater during firing up &c. or for controlling steam temperature.
