Abstract

508,880. Stud-and-socket fastenings. BARNICOAT, H. R. Feb. 7, 1938, No. 3852. [Class 44] A fastening particularly for engine cowlings and like uses comprises a spigot member 1 externally threaded and rotatably mounted in a nut 3 fixed on one member 5 to be fastened, the stud having a head comprising a flange gapped by diametrically opposed flats to leave parts 6 each formed with a groove adapted, on rotation of the stud, to engage a corresponding internal lug 20 provided in a socket member 18 secured to the other part 15 to be fastened. The stud is axially bored as shown and its head end is transversely slotted. Slidably mounted in the slot is member 7 having terminal segments 7<1> and carrying a pin 12 round which is disposed a spring 14 biassing member 7 outwards. Outward movement is limited by a head 11 on pin 12 so that normally the parts 7, 7<1> are flush with the end of the stud, the parts 7<1> providing with the parts 6 a cylindrical contour filling the socket to provide a surface flush with that of part 15. In use, the socket is applied to the head of the stud, the member 7, 7<1> being pressed back, by the tongues 20 or by a screwdriver inserted in the slot, till the grooves in parts 6 register with tongues 20. The stud is then rotated to engage the tongues in the grooves, whereupon the member 7, 7<1> returns under action of spring 14, to retain the parts 6, 20 against release movement.
