[Class 122 (v)] The tension of a coil spring 9 surrounding a shaft packing 7 is varied in accordance with temperature variations by means of a bi-metal element or elements 11. A number of bi-metal strips 11 of V shape are attached to one arm of a ring 3 adapted to position the packing in a casing 2. Change of temperature causes the free ends of the strips 11 to deform and press the spring up the inclined face 8 of the packing 7, thereby increasing its tension. Strips 11 may be replaced by arcuate strips secured at one end to the outer arm of member 3 or by an undulated ring-shaped member disposed between the spring and member 3. The bi-metal elements may be so arranged that increase in temperature produces either an increase or decrease in spring tension.
