[Classes 16 and 146 (ii)] An educational appliance for facilitating the study of foreign languages comprises a mechanical combination of a text having two or more distinct interlineated parts (text and translation) with a slotted screening frame, which is slidably mounted so that either one or the other part of the text may be screened at will. The sheets 19 which may comprise successive lines of the native text, a literal translation, a free translation and a phonetic rendering are bound by helices 20 between covers 22. The ends of the helices may be secured in stirrups 29 eyeletted to the covers. The slotted frame 24 engages the helices by tongues 25. For easy manipulation the frame is provided with a roughened grip 27, and, on the underside with a rounded button to slide on the leaves. The covers may be recessed to receive the button when the hook is closed. The frame may be disengaged by swinging it into the free part of the helices and distorting the latter. In a modification the frame is slidably mounted by means of slots engaging rivets on a stiff steel plate. The plate engages the helices of the binder by means of tongues. The leaves and covers are perforated to accommodate the rivet heads. Opposite pages of the book may be reversely printed so that it is always read with the helices at the same side. The frame may be extended to partly surround the helices and be engaged with them by struck-out lugs.
